Celebrity Spotlight: Dato’ Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh has been around for as long as we can remember. This Malaysian actress is orginally from Ipoh but she based herself in Hong Kong in her younger years to persure her passion for dance and acting. Soon after  her big move, she found a way to become the star that she is now. Michelle Yeoh is no stranger when it comes to the martial arts, and that is what made Michelle stand out from all the others.  She has starred in some of the biggest films to date, like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, ‘James Bond: Tomorrow Never Dies’ and many more memorable roles.

She has become recognized world wide, and in April 2001, Yeoh was awarded the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak, which carries the title Dato’ by Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak, which is her home state, in recognition of the fame she brought to the state.

Since it is her birthday (6th August), we want to put the spotlight on this hardworking actress. Here are a few fun facts that you may or may not already know about our very own, Dato’ Michelle Yeoh!

1. A pageant girl
She was crowned Miss Malaysia in 1983. Watch her pagent introduction HERE!

2. A commericial brought her stardom
Her acting career started from the commercial she filmed with Jackie Chan. These commecials caught the attention of film production company D&B Films and that was Michelle’s road to stardom! Watch the commericials HERE!

3. She dreamt of becoming a ballerina

Her biggest dream was to become a dancer. At the age of 4 she trained as a ballerina and at 15 she moved to England and studied at the London Royal Academy of Dance. But just before completing her degree at the dance academy, she encountered a spinal injury happened later ended Michelle Yeoh’s dream of being a prima ballerina but it didn’t stop her from being an internationally well-known actress.

4. Her love life
In 1988, Michelle got married to then boyfriend, Poon who was a billionaire. After she got married, she decided to retire from acting for a little while. Three years later, the couple split. And in 2008, Michelle Yeoh confirmed that she was engaged to french driver, Jean Todt.

5. She’s good at what she does
Michelle Yeoh is the only female star that Jackie Chan allows to do her own stunts. She trained for hours on end to be able to conqure the art of martial arts. Until now, she is confident in doing the right moves and she knows what she is doing.
