Ask The Expert: When His Mum Means Everything

Dear Ms. Lipstiq,

I’m feeling a little insecure at the moment, as I’m beginning to wonder if my seven year relationship with my boyfriend is going to take me anywhere. Everytime we have a conversation, he brings his mum into the picture. The other day, I was telling him how I would like to have a big garden when we buy a house together. Instead, he tells me that he isn’t sure if that’s a good idea as his mum hates gardens. His entire life revolves around his mum and I am beginning to wonder if he ever thinks of my feelings at all. Should I let him know about my feelings or should I just be quiet about it?

 Dear Ms. Chee Ling,

From your description above, we can see that he is what we consider as “mummy’s boy”. It certainly won’t be fair for you to make him choose between his mum or you. While his mother can be a part of your future plan, you should actually let him know that you have dreams as well and that you would like to have the freedom to do certain things when you start a family with him. It’s good that he is close to his mother as guys like this tend to understand ladies in general better. Get to know his mum and maybe you may end up understanding her better and finding that you ladies have loads in common with each and another. Do not judge his mum and let him know at the same time that you have opinions as well and you would appreciate the fact if he paid a little bit more attention to you.
