There’s no denying that food brings people together, especially Malaysians. We are truly blessed to live in a multiracial country with a diverse array of local foods that everyone can enjoy. Peranakan cuisine is my personal favourite – I believe it is the pinnacle of Malaysian cuisine, where two distinct cultures – Malay and Chinese – converge to yield the most delectable dishes.
If you share the same sentiment and adore Peranakan cuisine, you might want to get your hands on and devour Herba & Rempah’s aesthetically-pleasing and delicious gastronomic creations!
What makes Herba & Rempah so special is that they serve Peranakan cuisine with a modern twist, and we had the pleasure of sampling some of their delectable dishes – from traditional beef rendang to colourful roti jala with a side of authentic chicken curry.
About Herba & Rempah
Let’s learn a little bit about Herba & Rempah before we dive into their menu. The name ‘Herba & Rempah’ refers to the importance of combining healthy compounds of herbs and spices to create delectable meals. The online food platform serves authentic traditional recipes made with high-quality ingredients cooked with passion and love – which we believe translates into their unique dishes. With just one bite, you’ll be transported to your hometown, where your grandmother serves you a buffet of lovingly-prepared home-cooked meals – which is exactly what Herba & Rempah aspires to do.
While Herba & Rempah’s menu is quite extensive, serving both savoury dishes and sweet desserts, we’d like to highlight a few dishes that we think you should definitely try.
Beef Rendang
Nothing screams Peranakan food more than beef rendang. A dish that is traditionally a dry rendang in which the meat is slow-cooked for hours, achieving a rich but also dry and nutty (from the kerisik) flavour. Herba & Rempah’s is truly the most authentic beef rendang there is. The flavour and aromatic mix of spices in the beef is absolutely fantastic, and we couldn’t get enough of it.
Chicken Rendang
My personal favourite rendang would have to be the chicken rendang. Slow-cooked and simmered to perfection, with spice paste and coconut milk, Herba & Rempah’s chicken rendang yields flavourful and tender chicken with an intense aroma of traditional spices.
Pulut Kunyit
You know what goes well with rendang? Pulut Kunyit! This savoury, glutinous rice is a celebratory rice dish that is served at weddings, baby fullmoons, and other special occasions. If you’ve ever wondered why Pulut Kunyit is yellow, well, apparently, yellow represents good fortune, wealth, and royalty. The more you know, right?
Rainbow Roti Jala with Chicken Curry
Herba & Rempah definitely takes the cake for having the most beautiful Roti Jala. I mean, do you see how colourful they are, and how neatly they’re rolled? Opening Herba & Rempah’s box of vibrant rainbow-coloured Roti Jala will definitely make your day. And their Chicken Curry is simply *chef’s kiss*!
Flower Roti Jala with Chicken Curry
If you want to be the highlight of the party, then get your hands on Herba & Rempah’s Flower Roti Jala and watch the delighted faces of your loved ones. The Roti Jala is coloured naturally with strawberries, purple sweet potatoes, honeydew, blue pea flower, and turmeric, giving you stunning, vibrant hues. Plus, they’re shaped like lovely roses – so beautiful, it’s almost a shame to eat them! But, trust us, with just one bite – with their Curry Chicken – you’ll be asking for more.
Visit Herba & Rempah’s website to pre-order their dishes; and follow their Facebook and Instagram pages for more updates!
