From modernized versions of flowery nails to celebrities wearing tiny flowers in their hair, botanical beauty can be found almost everywhere. But what if the looks goes a little further than just flowers?
A popular Instagram account is based in Moscow examines niche cosmetic trends made with all-natural ingredients. The woman behind the account, known as Katya Pravda, has used everything from dragonfruit slices to turnips and slices of lettuce to change herself into works of art.
Katya initially intended to pursue a career as a fashion designer, but she swiftly changed her focus to beauty after realizing her enthusiasm for it. When she was 13 years old, she started sewing intricate theatrical costumes with unique details and accessories. She also began to delve into the realm of makeup and beauty, enhancing her appearance with false fingernails, eyelashes, wigs and different outfits. What’s most interesting about her creations is that they’re gender neutral.
She first began utilizing unusual natural elements as a result of her background. She was raised in rural Russia, surrounded by a variety of plants and animals, which served as a major source of inspiration for her. Currently, Katya chooses natural materials based on their appearance. Materials frequently capture Katya’s attention, whether they’re in a store, her parents’ garden, or what she sees on hikes, or even while she’s preparing food.
While Katya first drew inspiration from works of fine art, she now draws heavily on dance and performances for her aesthetic.
“I love the history of art and stories of distinct artists,” she says. “My inspiration has come from works of Isa Genzken, Pipilotti Rist, Donald Judd, and many others.”- Katya
But coming back to the supplies Katya uses, she doesn’t think any of them are particularly bizarre. She views her approach as organic because she is a cosmetic artist, designer, and farmer who grows some of the natural objects from scratch.
Katya typically models the looks on herself or people closest to her, such as her father, whose hand she once covered in cacti to create a strange sort of glove, to make her art even more personal. Check out some of Katya’s amazing creations below:
