Celebrity Skincare Brands: The Dope And The NOPE!

Nowadays, many celebrities are venturing out of their comfort zones to pursue entrepreneurial endeavours, and a number of them have found success in the beauty industry. There are countless new celebrity skincare brands that promise to make your skin better in some way, whether it’s to make your face glow or to lessen the look of fine wrinkles. Hence, it can be hard to determine which one’s actually worth your time and money. That’s why we’ve curated a list of skincare brands founded by celebrities and influencers that you should try out – and brands that you should steer clear of:

DOPE: Humanrace

For the past two decades, Pharell Williams has managed to show no signs of aging. So many of us were interested when he finally dropped his skincare regimen and revealed his new skincare brand, Humanrace! With the goal of encouraging individuals to prioritise their wellbeing, his products include a blend of natural chemicals from sustainably derived sources, such as charcoal powder and pomegranate enzymes.

Lipstiq’s pick: Lotus Enzyme Exfoliator

What sets this exfoliator apart from the others is that it combines glycolic, enzymatic and rice particles to remove dead skin cells for more balanced skin. Its key ingredients include glycolic acid, a blend of fruit AHAs, gentle rice particles and Lotus leaf (natural antioxidant that protects skin)!

NOPE: Kylie Skin

The first thing that pops into mind whenever Kylie Skin is mentioned is likely their controversial walnut scrub! Though physical exfoliants can remove dead skin cells on your skin, the product in question contains walnut shells, which can puncture our face too deeply, damaging our skin. Though some of their products are worth trying out, their hefty price tag says otherwise. It’s better to save your money, girlie!

DOPE: Handmade Heroes

Founded by Singaporean Lynsey Lim in 2015 and subsequently joined by Malaysians Bella Kuan and Lim Cai Jin, this clean beauty brand has become an essential in many skincare routines. Even Lily Collins uses their products! With the promise of “no fillers, no nasty chemicals, and no animal by-products”, all of their products are natural, vegan, and cruelty free!

Lipstiq’s Pick: The Ultimate Bakuchiol Booster Oil

This bestseller is a great alternative to retinol, since it provides the benefits of retinol without the downsides of photosensitivity. Great for sensitive skin! It contains 2% bakuchiol extract and squalane, which are both powerful anti-aging ingredients that will significantly improve fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and acne scarring.

NOPE: JLo Beauty

Jennifer Lopez, who is 52-years-old, doesn’t look a day over 30! But that doesn’t mean her skincare line will be worth your time. Their main ingredient? Olive oil. It is known for its moisturizing and antioxidant content that can help prevent aging. We’re not saying that their products suck, in fact, it’s not bad! It’s just unreasonably priced. Plus, you can only buy their entire kit instead of individual products on their website, which is kinda whack.

DOPE: Chuck’s Co

Founded by entrepreneur/influencer/girlboss Jane Chuck, Chucks’ Co believes in creating easy skincare staples that allow you to give yourself some well deserved loving care every day of the week! Their products contain no parabens, minerals, animal testing, alcohol and fragrances, so you can be sure that they’re super safe for you skin!

Lipstiq’s Pick: Self Love For All Honey Cream

If you’re looking for a versatile moisturiser that’s suitable for any skin type, this product is the one! It contains 42% Royal Jelly Extract (promotes collagen production), Niacinamide (minimises pores), and Malaysian Red Palm Oil (heals skin tissue and moisturises skin). It really is for all!

NOPE: Goop

Founded by Gwyneth Paltrow, Goop is certainly an enigma in the skincare industry. They promote a lot of misinformation and pseudoscience, and most of their products don’t even work! Not to mention the crazy price tags all of them have. A face cream for RM400? No thanks!

DOPE: Honest Beauty

Founded by Jessica Alba, Honest Beauty is best known for their ‘clean beauty’. True to their company name ‘Honest’, they are transparent and thoughtful when it comes to their product design, so no bullsh*t here! Their packaging is all recyclable, and made using 100% ‘tree-free’ paper made from upcycled sugarcane by-product.

Lipstiq’s Pick: Gentle Gel Cleanser

Perfect for everyday use, this gentle gel cleanser washes away dirt and does not dry out your skin! Infused with Chamomile and Calendula extracts, it leaves your skin feeling refreshed and clean every time.
