Whether you have Seasonal Affective Disorder or just had a bad day at work and want to cry it out, it’s always better if you have a good playlist that you can cry to. After scouring the internet for some top-tier sad songs as well as having a few crying sessions of our own, we’ve created a playlist of songs to cry to that you may or may not have heard of!
So grab some tissues because here come the waterworks!
Ylang Ylang – FKJ
No better way to start off a sad playlist than with some quite piano music to set the mood.
Liability – Lorde
The piano and Lorde’s raw vocals just make this an essential song in everyone’s sad playlist.
All I Want – Kodaline
If this song doesn’t make you cry, the music video just might (it features a cute dog – you’ll bawl your eyes out).
Tired – beabadoobee
Like the song title, this song might just soothe a tired soul.
Je Te Laisserai Des Mots – Patrick Watson
Another song with an emotional instrumental background and some raw vocals, perfect for crying to during rainy days.
Exit Music (For A Film) – Radiohead
Whenever Radiohead comes up, you know sh*t’s about to get DARK. Just the perfect song for some serious brooding.
Strange – Celeste
No one:
Celeste: From strangers to friends, friends into lovers, and strangers again.
Me: *ugly cries*
Pluto Projector – Rex Orange County
Like many of Rex Orange County’s songs, ‘Pluto Projector’ takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Listen to the live version for that extra emotion.
This song might just be one of Adele’s most emotional, heartbreaking, and moving songs. The lyrics, the piano, the VOCALS, you’ll cry harder as her voice gets higher!
Lose – NIKI
The perfect song for people who are just tired of dating. The lyrics “All I really know is when I’m lonely, I hate that I’m lonely, and that’s why I let you in” hits HARD.
Dealer – Lana Del Rey
Playing Lana Del Rey screaming “I don’t wanna live!” in the background while you’re sobbing is such a vibe.
Jealous – Labrinth
This is the perfect song for that period of time when you feel depressed after a bad breakup.
First Love/ Late Spring – Mitski
Mitski is just a master in making songs that make you want to cry yourself to sleep.
Jobless Monday – Mitski
Another song by Mitski for melodramatic, sad and unemployed peeps. See? Girl’s got range!
It’s Not The Same Anymore – Rex Orange County
The 2:56 minute mark is the perfect transition to some great lyrics that give an honest look into depression, and the low moments in life that many can relate to.
Exile – Taylor Swift
Ms Tay Tay and Bon Iver DELIVERED on this one. The penmanship for this song is flawless, giving an elegant description on separation and the end of a relationship.
Even If It’s A Lie – Matt Maltese
Though Matt Maltese is known for his song ‘As The World Caves In’, which is also a great addition to your crying playlist, this song is more low-key, yet still delivers great vocals that’ll bring up some hidden emotions.
Streetcar – Daniel Caesar
This one’s for the people who love driving at night and getting all the feels out there on the streets.
Breathe Me – Sia
One of her earlier creations, this song takes the cake for the most heartbreaking ballad by Sia.
I’ll Never Love Again – Lady Gaga
Oh. My. Gaga. If you’ve seen ‘A Star Is Born’, you probably cried when she sang this song at the end… and many weeks after that heartbreaking scene.
Stormy Weather – Etta James
Just imagine yourself as the main character of a movie, while Etta James sings about how bad life is.
