Makeup aesthetics and trends come and go like the wind, and when they’ve been disregarded for a while, some resurface as if they’d been around for a long time. Take, for example, mod eye makeup. Twiggy pioneered the doll eye appearance by using a few basic techniques to make her eyes appear wider and innocent, which is the essence of the 1960s style.

What was once a forgotten cosmetic style is suddenly resurfacing, notably on TikTok (duh!), with youngsters and makeup aficionados all around the world replicating this 60’s inspired mod makeup.

As intimidating as the makeup looks, it’s actually rather simple to accomplish if you want to travel back in time to a period when appearing stylish and groovy was the norm. The juxtaposition of the beautiful pastel colours and the hard black line on the crease, with incredibly bold eyelashes on the top and bottom, is what makes this eye makeup so fascinating. Anyone who glances at you will be captivated by your look.

Here’s a quick and brief tutorial on TikTok by Geena Hunt on how to do a simple 60’s mod makeup with products that you would likely have at home.

Of course, you don’t have to go all-out with this makeup look; a basic crease liner with a flash of colour on the lids and some massive spikey lashes will suffice. However, if you want to explore and delve into your creative side, here are some ideas to get you started.

To make your eyes the focal point of your appearance, use the least amount of makeup possible on your face. With pink or coral blush and beige lips, a more glowy and radiant look screams 1960s in all the right ways.

Also, for those of you who don’t wear falsies, here’s a brief tip: Apply a generous amount of mascara to both the top and bottom of your lashes. Before your mascara dries, squeeze your lashes with tweezers to create those distinctive spikes. Apply the same technique to the bottom lashes to achieve those lovely 1960s lashes.
