When it comes to shopping for Japanese items in Malaysia, two 100% Japanese stores come to mind – Daiso and Isetan. Both offer a wide variety of products, but while Isetan is more upmarket, Daiso offers a wealth of affordable – and unique – household items.
But is there a store that features the type of goods offered by Isetan, but at Daiso-like prices? You bet. Say hello to the new Japanese discount shop Don Quijote, also known as Don Don Donki. It has everything both Istean and Daiso could provide – but at cheaper price points!
Why you should shop at Don Don Donki now!
It has a mascot and shop theme song! Warning, the song might become an earworm!
Shoppers are welcomed by a mascot and a terribly catchy theme song. There are Japanese and English versions of the ditty:

It’s common for Japanese establishments to have mascots to bring in customers that are younger and would frequent the establishment more due to the kawaii mascots they have. Donki has 2 cute mascots, and they are both penguins – Donpen and Donko!
Its products are affordable!
Donki has a wide range of items – from makeup to groceries, they have it all! If you think the regular Japanese products you use are sold at a price point that might scar your wallet for a while, Donki’s got you covered! They have what you’re looking for (or something similar to it) available for a song!
I previously bought a makeup product from Donki. At SaSa or Waston’s, it’s usually priced at about RM50-RM60 per eyeliner. But Donki retails it for about RM40. The same goes for any Japanese grocery.
Food!
Donki also has a wide selection of ready-made Japanese food, with its signature dish being the yakiimo (roasted potatoes)! They also have a food court allowing you to indulge in Japanese cuisine on-site.
Multi levels!
Both the Donki store at Lot 10 and Tropicana Gardens Mall are multi-floored, so you can shop as much as you like. Each floor offers a different Japanese shopping experience! You’ll never be bored with its chaotic setting.
A third Donki outlet is slated to open at LaLaport BBCC in May! So start the countdown!
