Which came first? The kilt or the sarong? The sarong is a large piece of fabric with iconic checkered or batik patterns worn by a kilt as men and a skirt by women throughout South Asia and South East Asia. Modern sarongs today are usually printed with animal or plant motifs. Now, what’s all the fuss with sarongs? Up till the 1980s, the sarong was a relatively common piece of clothing usually worn in the comforts of one’s home by all races but in modern times, the only people that still don this incredibly versatile and comfortable piece of clothing are mostly Malays or our grandparents.

In an effort to bring back the sarong as a staple Malaysian piece, Random Alphabets will organizing a flashmob inspired by the annual “No Pants Subway” event whereby 1,200 New Yorker rode the subway to work without wearing pants in a snow storm. Boxers, thongs, granny panties, they were all there! Watch the video here.

Well, because we Malaysians are a little modest so we’re opting for the sarong instead! This flashmob organized by Random Alphabets will happen tomorrow and the venue has been revealed, we’re not saying where just yet! Read to find out more.

Who can participate: Anyone and everyone! Bring your friends and have a good laugh or better, make new friends!

What should you wear: A sarong of course! Well you can wear short or your jeans underneath if you’re shy but guys, here’s your chance to go airy in public for once!

When is it happening: 25th February at 4pm

Where is it happening: Go to http://www.facebook.com/events/296457863742375/ and click ‘Join/Attending’.

What to expect: Upon boarding the train, hold up an A4 paper with your sarong story (samples below) and have a great time! Be nice and courteous.

If you can’t make it to the event tomorrow, you can still participate by writing your sarong story on a piece of A4 paper and hold it when you take a picture of yourself in a sarong. E-mail it to KeretapiSarong@RandomAlphabets.com and they’ll post it on their website and on RandomAlphabets’ Facebook page. Check out pictures from Malaysians who have submitted to Keretapi Sarong’s page:
