We have come a long way in the world of makeup. There are numerous innovative products and formulas and new brands that have launched, like Fenty Beauty and Rare Beauty. However, with the constant surge of new makeup products in the past few years, it’s inevitable that some once-beloved-products would be cast away.
With that said, here are some once-popular makeup products that lost their hype.
Urban Decay’s Naked Palette Series
When Urban Decay first came out with their Naked Palette series, it was revolutionary, since it was mostly nudes in warm and cool tones. Which made sense, since it was the “Naked” palette – different shades of nudes would be ideal for this particular product. It was also the perfect palette for wedding looks, or just casual soft glam, as it had shimmers like coppers, rose golds and silvers.
However, for some reason, Urban Decay decided to go completely ape-shit with this series and come out with all kinds of Naked palettes differing in colours and textures. The Naked Heat was mostly all red and brick tones and The Naked Cherry was all pinks and fuchsia tones – and what is going on with the Naked Ultraviolet? Like what’s the point of calling the series Naked… if the colours are not “naked” like from beiges to browns?
While the shadows are somewhat sub-par, there’s nothing much that Urban Decay’s makeup palettes can offer to their consumers.
Stila’s Liquid Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow
Stila’s Liquid Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow was game-changing in the beauty community. The sparkle, the shine and the dazzle you rocked once you put one of the glitters on your eyes – you could never go back to normal shimmery shadows. My favourite was the Rose Gold Retro, and I would always apply it under the eyes to give that extra glint on my eye look. But, what was not my favourite was the fact that this liquid eyeshadow dried up so fast! This product literally lasted just a couple of months before everything just became all clumpy.
While Stila’s Liquid Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow placed the brand on the map, as it was super hard to find blinding and sparkly eyeshadow before, it just wasn’t enough, since there are newer and better glitter liquid eyeshadows that are much more affordable on the market.
The Balm Mary Lou Manizer
This highlighter was ground-breaking and it changed how makeup lovers perceived highlighters. People just couldn’t stop gushing about it and rightfully so, tbh. The Balm’s Mary-Lou Manizer was the perfect shimmery pale gold that just glided prettily onto your skin and gave off this natural dewy glow. Afterwards, the brand came out with other highlighters – Cindy-Lou Manizer and Betty-Lou Manizer.
As other bigger brands came out with their own versions of highlighters, somehow, the Mary-Lou Manizer just fell off the face of the earth and was forgotten. It came to the point that people actually forgot that The Balm was still on the market. I find it quite sad, actually, because their products are all really good – but I guess the competitive nature of the beauty industry pushed the brand into a deep dark corner.
Benefit Hoola Bronzers
The Hoola Bronzer was the ‘IT’ bronzer that beauty lovers used to warm up their faces. The formula is nice and buttery, which makes the blending of it so much easier. The hype lasted quite a while, because there were no other bronzers that created the same effect as Benefit Hoola Bronzer. But, once there were new bronzers that came out and out-performed this bronzer – it was game over. Makeup lovers never looked back at these Hoola Bronzers ever again.
The beauty community started looking for the faults in this product, in particular, the packaging. It’s made out of cardboard and is extremely bulky. The bronzer is much deeper in the box, which makes grabbing the product a bit hard. All in all, the Hoola Bronzer definitely lost its hype and was no longer talked about in the beauty community.
Beauty Blender Sponge
When I tell you that this brand revolutionized the application of foundation, it’s insane. This little sponge came out and everybody and their mothers bought it to witness how their foundation would look completely airbrushed after using it. Although this sponge was the turning point in the beauty industry, it’s now kind of neglected. People still use the beauty sponge – don’t get me wrong – just not this particular brand, even though they put the product on the map.
I find the price point to be super high for a sponge, and there are other more affordable ones that you can find on the market. Also, the brand was once in a scandal for releasing a photo of their new foundation, only to be met with backlash as the shade range mostly catered to lighter complexions. Can you imagine only having seven dark shades of foundation? Yikes!
After the big fiasco, makeup lovers stopped caring for this brand and the sponge – and to be frank, there are loads of better ones out there.
KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks
This line of liquid of lipsticks was a must-have at one point. The amount of times I heard that we should all buy the shade of Shadow and Bone made me want to gouge my eardrums – but I still bought it. But, ever since the scandal surrounding Kat Von Dee being an anti-vaxxer emerged, this brand had nowhere to go but downhill. They have somewhat rebranded themselves into KVD Beauty and released some amazing products, but it’s not much to redeem itself yet.
This product in particular was once an extremely hyped up product – but has now become completely silent and forgotten. The shade ranges were meh, with most of it being on the cooler side and the formula being mediocre at best. No wonder it lost its hype.
