What’s incredibly great about the fashion world is that there are endless aesthetics out there. Some might work for you that won’t work for others – and that’s completely alright. Our personal style defines who we are and that’s what makes it great about discovering our own aesthetic.
This year, we were introduced to a lot of fashion cores that have now become super popular – thanks to TikTok. A fashion core essentially means focusing one’s style on a single aesthetic. Hence, your entire outfit or wardrobe would be based on one fashion core.
Let’s look at some of the fashion cores that rose in 2021 that might arouse your interest in trying them out today:
Baddie
Let’s start with something that everyone can easily recognize – the baddie. The baddie core uncovers your inner true baddie that essentially doesn’t give a flying f*** about what anyone says about your looks. From this fashion trend came the saying “a bad b**** never gets cold”.
Dark Academia
So the whole notion of a dark academia aesthetic revolves around, you guessed it, academia. This fashion core highlights a high-class and vintage style of clothing, with the entire ensemble looking like you came out of a prep school.
Y2K Core
If you miss the 90’s to 2000’s era of fashion, then you will surely love this aesthetic. The Y2K fashion core was brought back, surprisingly by Gen-Z, who embraced the time when exposing the mid-riff was the ideal fashion statement. This fashion core has pop culture heavily featured in their ensemble, which is why I believe Y2K will never die and rightfully so.
Cottagecore
Such a simple and sweet look that literally anybody could pull off. Cottagecore is based on an idealized version of rural life in America – hence why the apparel mostly looks like it came from the 1900’s. But, I believe that this aesthetic – if you choose to wear it – will make you feel like you were supposed to be born as a fairy, somewhere in a meadow.
Grungecore
My personal favorite – grunge fashion. What makes the apparel “grunge” is the timeless, yet durable items often found in thrift shops. I love the grunge aesthetic due to the simple fact that, more often than not, the outfits are extremely baggy and loose and are not gender-restricted.
E-Girls
The E-girl revolves mostly around makeup looks which emphasize extremely flushed cheeks and super huge winged eyeliners. However, when it comes to the fashion aspect of the e-girl, it’s an amalgamation of punk and grunge – which makes it so much cooler. You would mostly see e-girls sporting a harness or a chain to complete their look.
Artsy / Maximalism
The fashion world has embraced minimalism because “less is more”, right? Well other fashion-goers are like “nope” and started to pile on clothes that are not only mismatched, but don’t make any sense – which is odd because it works! Maximalist or Artsy fashion has stormed the fashion realm and it’s literally here to stay.
Streetwear
If you’re striving for style and comfort, streetwear fashion core is the way to do it. It’s super casual but chic at the same time. Being comfortable while still looking stylish is the main goal with this aesthetic while you’re walking down the street.
