The days of sipping your soft drinks through a plastic straw at McDonald’s are almost over — as the fast food giant unveiled signs in several of its outlets nationwide, which state that plastic straws will no longer be provided, unless requested at the counter.
According to the posters, the “Say No to Straws” campaign will start running from 1st August 2018 onwards.
The decision comes in the wake of the government announcing plans to ban the sale of plastic straws, and other single-use plastic items, as part of an effort to reduce waste and help the environment.
Malaysians are no strangers to being plastic-conscious. We have adopted no-plastic bag practice in Selangor as early as 2010. Last year, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Melaka, and Johor had also ruled plastic ban in their respective states.
Shockingly, former government Barisan Nasional stated its intention to bring back plastic bags in Selangor and led Tun Dr Mahathir to criticize BN for its the backward thinking.
Perhaps, we should all consider buying our own metal straws to avoid using plastic ones? Say YES to saving the environment.
