The farthest I have gone for the sake of better skin is perhaps a regular cosmetic dermatology facial treatment. In all honesty, I didn’t think I needed anything more. Though far from perfect, my dry to combination skin had never struggled with acne or any other worrying issues.
Had I been pressed to point out my skin concerns, it would encompass having prominent enlarged pores, mild scarring, an uneven skin tone, the occasional hormonal breakouts, tiny bumps on the forehead, laugh lines, blackheads and well, freckles. It’s safe to say that some others have it way worse.
That said, what’s wrong with striving for the best skin possible instead of having it mediocre? I chanced upon the reputable M.A.C Clinic (formerly known as the Malaysian Aesthetic Clinic) after thorough research, and upon my first consultation with Dr. Kathryn to weigh in on my options, the Laser Genesis skin therapy was recommended for my skin.
The following account chronicles everything the Laser Genesis skin therapy entails, my experience after committing to four bi-weekly treatments at M.A.C Clinic, and the overall results garnered from those treatments.
What Laser Genesis is
This breakthrough non-invasive laser therapy stimulates the skin’s natural processes to reverse premature signs of ageing and sun damage on top of promoting a vibrant, youthful and healthy-looking complexion by stimulating the skin to produce new collagen. With Laser Genesis, there is completely no downtime and no side effects.
How it works
Laser Genesis involves shooting micro-pulses of laser energy onto the skin to stimulate the layers underneath the surface. What this does is activate collagen remodelling within the skin to rejuvenate and improve the skin’s overall wellbeing. Subtle results can be seen right after one treatment, but a full course of four to six treatments is usually recommended for best results.
What are its benefits
Some of the benefits from undergoing the Laser Genesis treatment include overall radiance and glow, minimised appearance of pores, a smoother skin surface, lessened skin redness, and fainter wrinkles as well as facial lines.
Who it is meant for
Anyone seeking a quick, no-downtime procedure to improve the overall complexion. Laser Genesis is a mild treatment and may be less effective on severe skin conditions, such as those with extremely deep wrinkles and facial lines, port-wine stains, freckles or sunspots. At M.A.C Clinic, other skin treatments may be prescribed for those aforementioned skin conditions by the experienced doctors.
My experience
Though Dr. Kathryn had briefed me wholly and patiently cleared all doubts, I remained apprehensive going into my first treatment. She began right after my skin was properly cleansed and given a quick run of microdermabrasion, but as soon as she hovered the hand-piece over my face for the first pulse of laser hit my skin, I couldn’t stop flinching.
The Laser Genesis skin therapy is supposedly soothing according to Dr. Kathryn, but it surely wasn’t for me. The worst case scenario which kept playing non-stop in my mind was that my skin would burn should the hand-piece touch my skin by accident (it’s not supposed to). Also, I kept feeling and hearing tiny zaps that didn’t sound comforting at all.
My pessimistic thoughts quickly proved to be irrational considering the laser will never torch the skin, and the tiny zaps? It turns out that my facial hair was literally getting zapped off, the same way laser hair removal would work – the laser pulses damage the follicles and well, scorch the little hairs into oblivion.
Zapping aside, the whole process was comfortable. Dr. Kathryn worked from one area of the face to another and explained that the laser pulses work to heat the upper dermis (found underneath the skin’s surface) in order to stimulate it for the growth of collagen. On the surface, the said heat is very, very bearable.
Upon completing the first session, my skin was left looking much brighter and more radiant. The following three sessions further enhanced those results. My pores are now a lot less noticeable especially around the cheek area, my skin looks extra awake and even toned even without makeup on, and foundation now rarely settles in my diminished laugh lines.
Overall thoughts
Granted, the Laser Genesis skin therapy in no way addressed all my skin concerns, but it looks way healthier and radiant overall. My skin also isn’t as susceptible to redness, which my pale, fair skin is more than used to. Let’s just say that my complexion is now camera ready at all times, with or without makeup on.
Would I recommend Laser Genesis? Totally. However should you be looking for a one-off solution to treat your skin concerns, this wouldn’t be it. The end result garnered is an accumulation of those from multiple sessions, and on top of that, the result will vary depending on the severity of your skin condition.
