Rejoice!

Women in Saudi Arabia have long been oppressed and treated unfairly as compared to the men. The women only got allowed to become lawyers in 2013, got their right to vote and run for office in 2015, and sadly, only about 15% of Saudi women are employed outside their homes. As of today, women will soon be allowed to drive for the first time ever.

This history-making decision was made by Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, and will be implemented by June 2018. With the current system, only men are allowed driving licenses whereas women who drive risk being arrested or fined. Saudi Arabia is, unsurprisingly, the only country in the world that forbid women from driving.

Additionally, the new law allows for women to take driving lessons without the permission of their male guardians, and to be able to drive anywhere their hearts desired. Understandably, the whole world is commending the huge step, some saying that Saudi Arabia will “never be the same again”.

Hurrah to gender quality!
