A new movie based on the infamous DC Comics character The Joker is in the works and it will be an origin story!
Todd Phillips, best known for creating The Hangover franchise, is set to co-write the film with Scott Silver and possibly direct it as well.
Jared Leto, who recently played the character of Batman’s favourite super villain in Suicide Squad, is not slated to appear in the film. The plan is to feature a new, younger actor in the role and not have this film be part of the current DC Comics Extended Universe.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. is launching a new label for DC Entertainment properties so that new films can be created that are “unconstrained by continuity.”
An intriguing part is the setting. The intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or The King Of Comedy.
We’re told that Phillips and Silver have already started writing, but there is nothing firm on where this will fit into the DC schedule.
Tell us, who do YOU think should play the Joker in the upcoming origin movie?
