Helmed by none other than director Angelina Jolie, the trailer for the Netflix original film First They Killed My Father has just been released. Based on the brutal Cambodian Khmer Rouge, the movie is slated to hit theatres and on Netflix on September 15 2017.
First They Killed My Father is an adaptation of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung’s memoir about surviving the Khmer Rouge regime that took place from 1975 to 1978. It takes viewers through a journey from when she was five when the Khmer Rouge ruled, until she was about nine years old.
Produced by Angelina Jolie and renowned Cambodian director cum producer Rithy Panh, the movie goes on to detail the relentless spirit of Loung and her family as they struggled to stick together throughout those oppressive years of the Khmer Rouge.
Interestingly, Brad Pitt and Jolie’s son Maddox Jolie-Pitt, who was in Cambodia with Jolie at the time of shooting, also serves as an executive producer for the film, alongside Loung Ung, Adam Somner, Michael Viera and Charles Schissel. Slumdog Millionaire‘sAnthony Dod Mantle serves as the director of photography for the movie.
First They Killed My Father will debut on Netflix and in theatres on September 15 2017.
