We’ll be real with you, there’s no vial of magic serum that will help grow out your hair in record time (minus extensions). But these tips will help you achieve amazing mermaid locks in no time.
1. Condition, condition, condition.
Here’s a rule of thumb to follow – if your hair is wet, you have to condition it. Over time, chemical processes like colouring and heat styling will cause strands to get thinner at the bottom. Conditioner helps replace the proteins inside the hair shaft and seal the cuticle. If your hair needs the extra loving, Ouai’s Repair Conditioner (RM115) works like a dream.
2. You don’t have to shampoo every time you shower
Shampooing every single time (and not conditioning) is the worst thing you can possibly do while trying to outgrow your hair. The purpose of shampoo is to wash away dirt and product buildup, but it can also remove essential natural oils that keep your hair strands soft and healthy. But when you do need a good lathering up, only work on your scalp and let the suds slide down strands. Try Sachajuan’s Moisturising Shampoo (RM95), infused with argan oil and silk technology for super soft hair.
3. Apply hair treatment weekly
Hair that’s longer than your shoulders can be aged and would need a little more TLC than the usual rinse and lather. We’re fans of Percy & Reed’s Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Overnight Recovery – the non greasy formula absorbs instantly into dry hair while you sleep (your pillows won’t suffer, we promise) and help hydrate hair, combat frizz and boost shine. Rinse it out in the morning, sans conditioner. Get yours for RM126 at Sephora.
4. Never miss a trimming session
Though this may seem contradictory to growing your hair out faster, it’s especially beneficial for the long run. Trimming your hair regularly prevents split ends from making their way up your strands, hence, requiring you to chop it off more often. Got split ends for days? Make an appointment at a Number76 hair atelier near you and let the professionals help you in achieving ultimate hair slayage.
5. If you have chemically treated or fragile hair, ponytails are strictly prohibited
Stylists everywhere would tell you that putting your hair up in a ponytail or tying it up with an elastic band is more damaging than most are aware of. Strands might literally break off where the elastic holds your hair together. If you need to get hair off your neck, consider claw-clipping your hair gently in a bun to prevent further damage.
6. A cold water rinse goes a long way
We swear by this simply because cold water seals your hair, preventing snags and heat damage. It also really helps in making your hair grow longer and faster. Don’t let the cold bother you, just do it for a few seconds and you’re good to go!
