Looks like we’ve pretty much reached peak glitter this year. People are using it as highlighter, eyeshadow, butt makeup, hair makeup and of course, it’s fundamental purpose in the unicorn trend that’s not dwindling anytime soon. Hopefully.
Personally, I’m a sucker for a whole lot of glitter. It makes me feel like a real-life, oversized fairy, if not a princess mermaid. And what could be better than that? Caring for Mother Nature, that is.
Not everything that shimmers is sure to fade. Glitter is one of the many forms of microplastic that is wreaking havoc on our environment, ocean ecosystems, and in turn, our foods.
Although the twinkly specks may wash off after one wear, the tiny pieces of micro plastic don’t just disappear. They start their journey down the shower drain, into the ocean, where they never ever break down. Consequently, they negatively impact the environment and all aquatic life forever.
According to researchers, there are 8 million tonnes of the stuff ending up in the ocean every day – the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic every minute. And shockingly, 92% of the plastic in the world’s oceans is made up of micro plastics. 92% guys !!!
Don’t worry though, you can still shine bright as long as you choose your mermaid-y products wisely. Look out for the word “biodegradable” on your shimmer dust packaging, and avoid glitter products with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) in them.
