As of Saturday, 10th June 2017, all True Fitness & True Spa centres in Malaysia have ceased operations, just a day after the chain announced its closure in Thailand.

“The past few years have proved challenging, and unfortunately the businesses are no longer financially viable due to evolving market conditions,” said True Fitness in a statement on its Malaysia website. As no refunds will be made, the company also added that arrangements have been made with another centre, CHi Fitness, for affected customers to continue their fitness regime there while it works on alternative arrangements for True Spa customers.

However, CHi Fitness released a statement denying that there is an agreement with True Fitness Malaysia for membership transfers to its gym centres. CHi Fitness operations director Ashley Paulus did clarify that True Fitness Malaysia was in the process of purchasing one-month membership vouchers from them.

CHi Fitness operations director Ashley Paulus did clarify that True Fitness Malaysia was in the process of purchasing one-month membership vouchers from them.

“They have asked to purchase 20,000 one-month membership passes from us. There is 20,000 available and we have agreed to honour them over the period of two years,” she said.

Paulus said when True Fitness Malaysia approached them, they were told that CHi Fitness would only be able to offer monthly memberships and would not be taking over any memberships. “We were never approached or offered to take over their membership, their database or to honour any of the lifetime memberships with True Fitness,” she said.

Understandably enough, patrons of True Fitness are upset and are calling foul over the company’s abrupt closure as it was still recruiting members 2 days before they shut down. Some members have membership programmes that cost almost RM10,000 and so far, True Fitness Malaysia aren’t picking up anyone’s calls.

True Group was established in Singapore in 2004, and later expanded to Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and China with more than 200,000 members across the region.
