Studio Ghibli Is Building A Theme Park Based On My Neighbor Totoro

Studio Ghibli, behind classic animated movies like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, is creating a theme park in Japan.

The iconic Japanese animation firm has teamed up with the government of Nagoya’s Aichi Prefecture for the latest installment which will be based on My Neighbor Totoro, the 1988 classic anime by Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. The lush site will be part of a 200-hectare park previously used for the Expo 2005 world exposition, scheduled to open in summer 2020.

Studio Ghibli producer, Toshio Suzuki and Aichi governor, Hideaki Omura made a public statement about plans for the park, but gave no details on cost or financing. Those plans are reportedly an expansion of a previous collaboration that brought a recreation of Satsuki and Mei’s house to the park in 2005 for the World’s Fair.

Although we aren’t sure whether any other of the studio’s properties will become attractions, it’s probably safe to say that park visitors won’t see the demons from Princess Mononoke being recreated in real life anytime soon.

PS: What happened to Genting Highland’s 20th Fox Century theme park?
