There seems to be a flu bug going on and as much as we’d like to blame it all on the volatile weather, we know that it takes much more to getting sick than running around in the rain. If you notice, there’ll always be that one friend who never seems to fall ill, so what’s her secret? Well apart from staying away from diseases and infections, here are some important routines that will help you stay in the pink of health regardless of season!
Keep clean
Your mum nagged you to wash your hands and keep your room clean not because she was anal about cleanliness. On an average day, we come into contact with and there is an average of 50,000 bacteria per square inch on our bodies. In fact the top 10 things we come into contact with everyday that contains the most amount of bacteria include our purses, money, remote controls, water fountains, shopping carts, mobile phones and elevator buttons.
Wash your feet and take a shower after sweating especially after intercourse. Don’t be a pig and change your clothes and undergarments on a daily basis. Leaving your clothes in a pile for weeks without washing will encourage bacteria to multiply.
Eat healthily
A balanced diet will result in a healthier and stronger immune system which means you’ll never have a reason to fall sick. A balanced diet should include fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains which are rich in vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and antioxidants which protect the body from free radical damage and aging. We know how busy you are but try to avoid canned and processed food as well as junk food. Opt for freshly produced food where nutrients are still intact.
Sleep well
If you don’t get enough sleep during the night, you’ll end up yawning a lot during the day which will result in larger amounts of viruses entering your body. Just kidding! The average adult requires 8 solid hours of sleep every night because sleep deprivation can lead to health problems and our internal organs renew its cells during the night.
Also, insufficient sleep will affect your mental health leaving you tired and irritated throughout the day. Make sure your bedroom is located in the quietest part of the house, keep your bedroom clean and invest in good pillows and mattresses to ensure quality sleep every night of the year.
“Ohm” away!
In this fast paced world where we’re always on the go, how often do we stop and smell the daisies, really? Stress is a silent killer which can be countered with meditation, a form of mental exercise to help you gain freedom from stress, anxiety and depression.

Exercise can help develop immunity and resistance to diseases and at the same time burn those calories from accumulating in your body. There you have it, five ways to stay healthy without having to take any of those nasty medications. So if you find yourself getting sick more than usual just remember to clean up, eat right, sleep well, meditate and exercise! Make 2012 the year you start living healthier, for real.
