WhatsApp is arguably the most commonly used messenger app on the planet, and ain’t nobody is denying that it has revolutionised the way we connect with one another. That said, one elephant that needs to be addressed is how annoying some WhatsApp group chats can be, consistently making our blood boil.

From sharing breaking political or defaming news, and bogus health warnings to kepochi aunties trying to dig misfortune out of you to feel better about their pathetic lives, redundant chain messages and mind-boggling riddles no one can solve, anything clearly goes on WhatsApp.

Well, if you’re an admin of a WhatsApp group and false news is often spread amongst the members in the group, you may just be in deep sh*t.

According to Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari, the spread of false information can be a threat to national security and action can be taken under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Offences under the Act include disseminating fake news, fraud, libel, and exposure of classified data under the Official Secrets Act. At any time, the admin could be called in for investigation.

Admins, take note that you are now to be gatekeepers for your group chats, whether or not you are to be the one to share that non-credible piece of info..
