According to The Hollywood Reporter, a reboot of the 1999 sci-fi classic The Matrix is currently in the works!
Few details of the project exist, however. But so far, we know Warner Bros are on it. Sources report that the creators of the trilogy, the Wachowski sisters, are not currently involved in the reboot and their relationship to any new project has yet to be determined.
As for the star of the reboot, there’s been an interest in featuring Michael B. Jordan, while superhero movie scriptwriter Zak Penn might be penning his treatment to the script.
It’s unclear as to what form the reboot would take. So far, an idea to turn it into a TV show was scrapped, though there is an interest in mimicking the latest Star Wars franchise model, in which stand-alone films like Rogue One.
In a recent interview, The Matrix’s original star, Keanu Reeves, even expressed interest in reprising his role as Neo if the Wachowskis were involved. “They would have to write it and direct it,” he told Yahoo Movies. “And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?”
The Matrix became an unexpected smash after its release in 1999, thanks to its revolutionary special effects and a story line that questioned notions of reality at within a new digital age. The film picked up four Academy Awards, and while its sequels, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, were less favoured, they still came out as huge box office successes.
