On October 20th, 1407 units of Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphones were stolen from a cargo depot at Kuala Lumpur International Airport worth up to RM3.23mil.

According to the police reports, a group disguised as transport company representatives staged a heist at the MAS Kargo storage area and escaped with the smartphones in a stolen lorry.

However, the Malaysian police have busted a gang linked to the heist, and this follows with the arrest of 13 suspects, including the alleged mastermind. The suspects, aged between 22 and 43, comprise four women and nine men.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Director, Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the police, acting on a tip-off, mounted an operation on October 23 and nabbed the suspects at 11 locations in the MAS Kargo area, housing areas in Nilai, Puchong and Sepang, and an electronics shop in Bukit Bintang area.

He also cited that one of the suspects, aged 42, surrendered at the Sepang police headquarters recently.Syed Ismail also noted that initial investigations also revealed that the alleged mastermind was a staff member of a transport service providing “inside information” on the smartphones. He also mentioned that one of the female suspects had allegedly bought 80 units of the smartphones for RM104,000, which were believe to have been sold to the public for RM1,850 each..

According to Syed Ismail, the police have already recovered 71 units of the Samsung Galaxy note, while the rest are still being traced. (Source)
