Remember when Malaysian student Christine Lee Jia Xin made headlines in May this year? No? Here’s a refresher..
21-year-old Lee who is living in Australia was arrested after she spent AUD$4.6 million that was wrongly deposited into her account as an overdraft in 2012.
Within 12 months, she spent $3.3 million on transfers and an extravagant shopping spree consisting of branded handbags and jewellery.
If that wasn’t enough, she was living in a $3,120 per month sub-penthouse apartment with a stunning view of the Sydney Harbour.
The best part of it all is that she claimed that she thought her parents had deposited the money into her account. Overly generous parents?
Well, Lee has pleaded NOT guilty to the fraud charges and her lawyer, Hugo Aston, says that she will be defended to the maximum against charges of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and deliberately dealing with the proceeds of crime.
Her lawyer, and family is now in Sydney to offer their moral support throughout the course of her trial. We’ll update once the final verdict is out!
