The whole of Thailand is grieving as their revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej has died at age 88. Bhumibol, the world’s longest reigning monarch, reigned Thailand for 70 years and 126 days.
The Thais have utmost respect for Bhumibol as he had greatly contributed to his nation by unification in the often tumultuous Thailand, revolutionising economy, the general welfare of his people, and modernisation. He will always be known as the caring, wise and dedicated leader Thailand has known and tremendously loved.
Following his death, tourism is expected to slow down in Thailand as a one-year period of mourning has been declared. Partying and drinking in public are also off limits and the government has called on the country to avoid “joyful events”.
With that, tourists who are visiting Thailand are urged to be sensitive and respectful towards the feelings of the Thais over the coming months. Behave appropriately when in Thailand, and it’s best to wear sombre clothing in public.
