On top of the parking fee hike in KL, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is planning to impose road pricing or congestion charges for private vehicles next year in the capital’s business district, upon the Mass Rapid Traffic’s (MRT) completion in 2017.
The government plans to make it difficult for private vehicles to enter the city to make the use of public transportation more enticing. According to the Senior Deputy Director at DBKL’s Urban Planning Department, the pricing for each vehicle has yet to be finalised, and further information is yet to be disclosed.
The thing is, congestion is not just a private car problem, but also involves all modes of transportation including bikes, trucks and public vehicles. Why are private car owners the only ones affected? That seriously isn’t fair, considering all the other vehicles contribute to the road congestion.
A lot of things need to be considered. What about those living in the city? Do they have to register a separate permit to drive in the city without charges?
Looks like the rich will get richer and the poor, well.. Let’s just pray this won’t follow through.
