Anger. Fury. Rage. Temper. All these mean the same and have never brought any good to anyone. Admittedly, there are too many things that make us blow our top off these days: crying babies on a plane, endless traffic jams, circling for parking, mean bosses and boyfriends who don’t understand why we do what we do.
The truth is, getting angry not only confuddles our state of mind, it also leads to harmful psychological stress such as heart disease and depression. Do you let go or learn to conrol your anger? Read on for tips on how you can deal with stress and anger at the office!
Firstly be aware of your anger. Imagine this, if you’re trying to call a client and she doesn’t pick up or call back, instead of getting angry, reflect on the situation and try to understand that the former may be busy or tied up with work. Not everything is about you. The best way to emphatize is to put yourself in other people’s shoes.
Often times, we speak our thoughts faster than we think. Well the next time you’re about to say something mean, hold that thought and think positive thoughts like your favourite vacations spot or your pet waiting for you back home. If that fails, close your eyes and count to ten or find a quite spot in your office to meditate.
If you find yourself getting edgy during meetings, try getting your points across politely and structure them well but take time to listen to others as well. The exchange of ideas might result in better ones along the way.
Too often, we spend time complaining and bitching about problems instead of finding ways to solve them. Make a list of goals you wish to acheive on a weekly basis and set out to complete them. Don’t be afraid to get help from others if you need it, take a proactive role and your bosses will recognize your efforts soon enough.
Don’t let people push you around and spoil your mood. Learn to be decisive and say no instead of taking all the work onto yourself, the key is to be courteous and simple. It’s easy to be angry and decisions made out of anger will affect the people around you be it at work or at home. Nobody likes an rage machine and it’s a sure way to drive people out of your way and life.
Plus, your soul will thank you for it!
