Non-sustainable clam shell containers made from polystyrene will be banned in the Federal Territories from January 1, 2017, so folks in Kuala Lumpur have got about six months to get rid of the tapau containers.

From next year onwards, only biodegradable products will be allowed to be used in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan.

This ruling was implemented in Pasar Raja Bot in Chow Kit, and will be extended in the next couple of months to include night markets, shopping malls, food trucks, hypermarkets and hawker centres.

It will be carried out in four phases to encourage folks and traders to gradually eradicate themselves off plastic foam products until the FT Biodegradable Product Usage By-Law is enacted.

Polystyrene takes 100 to 500 years to degrade, hence it is extremely harmful to the environment.
