The next time you park your vehicle in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre, make sure that you’re done with whatever you’re meant to do within two hours. Starting July 16, parking will be limited to two hours and you will not be allowed to top up the meter.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said this is done to deter motorists from hogging parking space for long periods of time and depriving others from parking. Additionally, it is done to encourage people to commute via public transport when entering the city and to prompt people to park at designated parking centres and walk.
The parking fee has also been increased to RM2 for the first hour and RM3 for the second hour. Those who surpass the two hour limit will have their cars clamped or towed away.
This two hour ruling will start in Bukit Bintang, KLCC, Ampang and other areas in the city centre. Townships like Bangsar, Kepong, Hartamas and Brickfields will not be affected yet.
With that, more electronic boards will be installed to display the number of available parking space in shopping complexes and commercial buildings to deter motorists from parking on the roads.
Future plans to ease congestion also include building trams and introducing a congestion charge like Singapore’s ALS (Area Licensing System).
Hmm.. Two hours is clearly insufficient and many KL-lites are unhappy with the new ruling. Uber and Grab everyone??
