From July 1, the Langkawi Municipal Council City of Tourism will be imposing a levy between RM1 and RM9 for tourists per day of stay on the island.
The levy amount would depend on the class of accommodation – tourists staying in one-star or two-star hotels will be charged RM1 per room per night; three-star or four-star accommodation, RM3; five-star accommodation, RM5; six-star accommodation, RM7; and seven-star accommodation, RM9.
This levy isn’t something new as similar charges have been imposed in Malacca, Penang and Kuala Lumpur to boost tourism. If the levy collection is satisfactory, more tourism-related programmes will be implemented to benefit the tourists.
