For Chinese New Year, Lai Ching Yuen at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur and its team of talented chefs – led by the Executive Chinese Chef Terrence Foong – have crafted several delicious signature 9-course Chinese New Year set menus for you to welcome prosperity and auspicious luck for the Year of the Monkey. With an array of scrumptious dishes prepared, this cosy restaurant would be a splendid place to hold your reunion dinners and Chinese New Year get-togethers.
On top of the set menus, Lai Ching Yuen is also taking your yee sang to the next level by offering a few different selections that are sure to satiate your taste buds: Jelly Fish and Crispy Fish Skin Yee Sang, Soft Shell Crab and Norwegian Salmon Yee Sang, Sliced Abalone Yee Sang, Scallop, Pear and Mango Yee Sang, as well as the Norwegian Salmon and Crispy Fish Skin Yee Sang.
This year, the team of chefs have curated a wide range of traditional Chinese dishes that include the Crispy Pork Knuckle, Braised Pork Knuckle with Sea Moss and Dried Oyster, Chinese Wax Meat Rice, Fried Rice with Assorted Chinese Wax Meat Wrapped in Lotus Leaf, and Deep Fried Nian Gao. Aside from being a part of the Chinese New Year set menus, these dishes would also be available to be ordered ala carte.
Lai Ching Yuen offers five different Chinese New Year set menus, and we recently got to sample the 9-course Active and Vigorously set menu, which is priced at RM1268 nett per table of 10. This set comes with the Yee Sang with Jelly Fish and Crispy Fish Skin, which we thought was unique. The crunchy jelly fish and crispy fish skin enhanced the textures on the plate for an even tastier and more appetising yee sang.
Assorted Seafood Soup with Tofu – This soup looked uninteresting, but it was surprisingly flavourful. Inside, there were chunks of tofu, mushroom, egg and generous chunks of seafood like crabmeat, scallop and prawns. It’s definitely worth a try, so don’t let it’s looks fool you.
Buttered Prawn – This dry buttered prawn dish was fantastic and the big prawns were served just the way we like it – with tons of greasy egg floss goodness.
Spicy Malt Prawn Ball with Dried Chilli – Do note that this dish is NOT included in the Chinese New Year set menu, but the Executive Chinese Chef Terrence Foong prepared this, which is one of his signature dishes, for us to try. It’s unlike any other prawn dishes we’ve tried and this delicious dish fused spicy, sweet and savoury flavours.
Steamed Mandarin Fish with Minced Ginger – The fragrant soy sauce marinade flavoured the buttery, smooth fish very well. We enjoyed every bit of this dish and it’s such a classic.
Cantonese Style Roasted Crispy Duck – It’s rare for us to get duck in KL with such crispy skin, but now we know where to find it. The skin was full of flavour and the duck meat wasn’t tough. This was one of our favourite dishes from the entire set menu.
Deep Fried Enoki Mushroom with Hong Kong Kailan – We liked the deep fried enoki mushroom as it added a unique and savoury twist to the otherwise plain kailan.
Fried Rice with Assorted Chinese Waxed Meat Wrapped in Lotus Leaf – The fragrance from the lotus leaf was infused into the fried rice and it was a great carb option that complemented the other dishes served to us.
New Year Nian Gao Dual Variation and Double Boiled Chrysanthemum with Longan and Black Sesame Rice Dumpling – If you’re a fan of nian gao, you NEED to get to Lai Ching Yuen to try this. The firm yet chewy nian gao is sandwiched between yam and sweet potato, then coated with batter before being deep fried. It was surely a treat for us, paired with the sweet chrysanthemum.
Besides Lai Ching Yuen, Grand Millennium KL’s all-day dining restaurant The Mill will also be offering a Chinese New Year buffet spread and for bookings for a table of 8 and above, guests will receive a complimentary yee sang. The buffet spread is priced from RM98 for adults, and from RM48 for children.
Lai Ching Yuen’s Chinese New Year Yee Sang set menus are available until the 29th of February 2016, and they’re priced from RM1268 for a table of 10. Check out the official website or Facebook page for Lai Ching Yuen at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur for more details and booking information.
