Chinese New Year is drawing near, whether or not we’re prepared. For this reason, Sime Darby Convention Centre’s (SDCC) China Treasures restaurant is now beginning to usher in the Year of the Fire Monkey with festive set menus available for early bookings from 1 November to 31 December 2015.
Early bird vouchers are available at only RM588 nett per table of six and RM798 nett per table of 10 in November 2015. Come December 2015, the vouchers will be priced at RM688 nett per table of six, and RM898 nett per table of 10. These vouchers will be valid for use from 1 January to 29 February 2016.
For the eve and first day of Chinese New Year, celebratory set menus will be available for RM2,080 nett per table of 10 and the set will include a RM100 voucher for the next visit, chrysanthemum tea, tidbits and a special gift. With this, the dishes are believed to bestow happiness, longevity, prosperity, luck, success and love for the new year.
Fortunately, we were so kindly invited by China Treasures to give its promotional 2016 Chinese New Year menu a taste test. Now, let’s get on to the food!
Golden Sea Whelk Yee Sang – We’ve never seen yee sang done this way, but we loved it! Whelk is a kind of sea snail that’s firm and crunchy, but not quite as firm as octopus. For this yee sang, the whelk was a little spicy, but it really gave the myriad of flavours and textures an extra kick.
Double Boiled Chicken Soup With Dried Scallop & Mushroom – This soup was comforting and savoury, but it wasn’t very exciting. Inside, there was a tiny bit of dried scallop, chicken meat and beancurd.
Roasted Crispy Chicken Infused With Five Spices & Garlic – The five spices really heightened the aroma and flavours of the chicken. The skin was delightfully crunchy too! Really lovely.
Steamed River High Fin Patin Fish With Ginger & Chilli Sauce – Even though it’s a simple dish, we thoroughly enjoyed the freshwater patin fish that was tender, and well-bathed in the tasty ginger and chilli sauce.
Pan-Fried Tiger Prawns With Special Honey Marmite Sauce – These prawns were definitely worth getting our hands dirty for! The sauce was sweet yet savoury and was really appetising. Just one wasn’t enough.
Braised Stuffed Beancurd Roll & Black Mushroom With Seasonal Vegetables – There’s nothing really special about this dish, but it was satisfyingly flavourful and the beancurd was velvety soft.
Claypot Rice With Diced Chicken & Yam – Amongst all the dishes served, the claypot rice was definitely the biggest disappointment. It lacked flavour, and just wasn’t eventful.
Sweetened Kiwi With Sago and Deep Fried Chinese New Year Dumpling – A perfect ending to our meal, this dessert combo was truly enjoyable. The sweetened kiwi with sago wasn’t sickly sweet and was filled with different kinds of fruit. On the other hand, the deep fried pastry was filled with nian gao, which was a nice surprise.
And here’s a look at China Treasures’ celebratory set menu for the eve and first day of Chinese New Year!
