The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) is a registered charity body established in 1966 to provide education, care, and support services for people affected by cancer. It’s the first cancer-related NGO established in Malaysia, and the only charity body that provides an extensive range of cancer services, treatment, and support to the public.
Their mission is simple, “To ensure that no Malaysian fears cancer by creating an understanding of cancer that leads to prevention and early detection, and by providing the best possible care and support for those affect by cancer.”
It is true when we say that most people shy away when they are diagnosed with cancer, as much as most people are afraid of finding out that they have cancer. This is because a lot of fear, confusion, and conflict on top of dealing with physical changes are brought into the life-changing situation.
But by, “Giving Hope. Celebrating Life”, the NCSM aims to further educate, care, and support, in order to empower individuals and those affected with cancer to maintain the highest possible quality of life. And Adeline Joseph, Head/Counsellor for NCSM’s “Resource & Wellness Centre”, testifies to it:
Within their “Resource & Wellness Centre”, is a friendly environment that consists of volunteers, medical personnel, and fellow cancer survivors themselves who receive individuals with wide open arms to help them cope with cancer. Breast cancer survivors, especially, may gather strength channeled through their support group, as well as the specially designed wellness classes that are available free of charge such as:
1. Massage and aromatherapy
2. Yoga
3. Meditation and relaxation
4. Qigong
5. Reiki
6. Reflexology
True to its motto, “Giving Hope. Celebrating Life”, the NCSM’s “Women’s Cancer Support Group” breathes life and joy into the lives of women with cancer, reminding them that they are never truly alone. With this holistic approach to the care of cancer patients, it is with sharing experiences and interacting with people who truly can relate to and understand each other, that they enable themselves through the life crisis.
