University Malaya postgraduate Roshini Muniam was a victim of sexist Internet trolls who taunted her when she took part in AXE Malaysia’s search for an Apollo Space Cadet to represent Malaysia. She was subject to discriminated by male voters, and was insulted on the AXE Facebook page for being a woman. Some commenters found it surprising that she, a woman, had a desire to go to space, while another said women should be prohibited from competing in the contest because they menstruate.
But now, the 27-year-old can give her trolls the “I-told-you-so” face now that she will be representing Malaysia at the AXE Apollo Space Academy camp in Florida, United States.
Roshini will be one of only 22 people worldwide to head to the AXE Apollo Space Academy camp in Florida in United States, standing a chance to go to space onboard the Lynx, a suborbital space plane that takes passengers more than 100 kilometers into space, achieving astronaut status.
Roshini has also earned heroic status in our eyes now that she’s Malaysia’s first female astronaut. Roshini managed to place herself ahead of four male finalists, earning up to 158,320 votes.
Can’t help but ask again – Who runs the world?
