Jamie Oliver long broke away from commercial cooking to advocate healthy food and eating habits. He also campaigned in schools all over England to make sure kids knew what they were getting into their tummies. One of his long-term goal was to combat obesity, and he recently went one step forward in achieving his goal.
George Osborne recently announced a sugar tax on soft drinks in the UK’s Wednesday budget, and no one was happier than Jamie Oliver. He took to Instagram to announce his achievement;
“We did it guys!! We did it!!! A sugar levy on sugary sweetened drinks… A profound move that will ripple around the world… business can not come between our kids’ health!! Our kids’ health comes first… Bold, brave, logical and supported by all the right people,” he wrote.
“Now bring on the whole strategy soon to come… Amazing news,” he added, ending on a hashtag of his own name #jamieoliver.
So far, there has been mixed reactions from the people, with one user saying, “Taxation won’t stop parents giving their kids sugary drinks.” on Twitter.
This new tax will be introduced in 2017, and it does seem like Jamie Oliver did it with noble intentions. What do you think?
