V For ‘Very STANKy’: Dealing With Funky Vaginal Odour

What’s that weird smell coming from Miss V?!

We’ve all been there – going about our day, when we suddenly pick up an odour coming right from our vijayjay. Vaginal discharge is a whitish or transparent fluid produced by our vagina. For many vaginal owners of varying ages, this discharge can have a strong odour. Fishy, metallic, yeasty, and sweet scents are all possible.

The secretions keep the vagina healthy by protecting it from infection, lubricating it, and maintaining overall health. There are, however, some natural ways to get rid of the odor – if it becomes too strong and lasts a long time.

1. Practice good hygiene

Men’s Health

Vaginal odor can be reduced by following safe and gentle vaginal hygiene techniques. It is not necessary to carry out an intensive douche of the vaginal area – just mild cleaning will do the trick:

  • Wash the area between your legs. A damp washcloth and soap can assist in the removal of dead skin, sweat and debris. Hence, letting water wash over the area to keep it clean is fine.
  • Avoid loofahs, as they can cause minor tears that could lead to infections.
  • Don’t use scented soaps or body wash. Your vagina has a natural pH and using scented soaps will tamper with the pH and cause bacteria to breed. If possible, opt for fragrance-free washes for your vagina.

2. Change your underwear

The List

Say yes to cotton! If you’re someone who loves wearing polyester and satin panties, it’s time for a change. Instead of allowing sweat to dissipate, these synthetic fabrics trap it against your skin and keeps it there. Cotton is breathable and does a great job of wicking perspiration and moisture away from your body. It’s also really comfortable!

3. Avoid tight clothing

Detroit Free Press

Yep. Ditch those tight outfits! Anything that is too tight in the vaginal area is a big NO, as it will only elevate the temperature. Clothing that is excessively tight prevents your vaginal area from breathing. The importance of getting enough oxygen for good vaginal health cannot be overstated. Also, wearing tight clothing will cause you to sweat, and you don’t want a musky odor down there.

4. Avoid douching

Women’s Health

Douching is basically washing the inside of your vagina with water or other washing materials. You may believe that it aids in the elimination of harmful germs, but it also eliminates beneficial bacteria. Skip the artificial washes and let your body work out the bacteria ratios.

5. Care for the vagina before and after sex

ABC

Sex introduces bacteria. And foreign substances like condoms contain lubricants and spermicide. To help maintain natural bacteria levels, wash before and after intercourse. When semen comes into contact with vaginal fluid, it might cause an odour. Some lubricants can change the pH of the vaginal fluid, which can change the smell. To reduce odour intensity, you should wash the vaginal area before and after sex. Washing with just water is fine, there’s no need to use scented soaps. You can also consider using condoms to avoid contact between vaginal fluid and semen.

6. Don’t steam

Healthline

Your vagina definitely doesn’t need a spa. Some people think it helps clean and keep your vagina healthy, but I hate to break it to you – it doesn’t work that way. Your vagina goes through a lot, but there isn’t a need for a special spa day! Because your skin is so sensitive and delicate down there, it doesn’t take much to burn it. Furthermore, warming your vaginal area may generate an environment conducive to the growth of bacteria. Your vagina literally cleans itself. The bacteria in a healthy vaginal environment help keep the vaginal pH at the proper level, but altering this environment with steaming or douching can actually increase the risk of infection. Why give Miss V a hard time?

The vagina has a distinct scent. Some women are self-conscious about their vaginal odour, yet it is typical for a healthy vagina to have a faint smell. Just bear in mind that it’s okay to have a weird, smelly vijayjay and every woman has a different scent. Only head to the doctor if there’s a continuous strong odour from down there.
