Hurrah! It’s been a long time coming..

The amendments made to the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987 have been passed by the Dewan Rakyat, and this means that the first step to legalising e-hailing services like Uber and Grab is already underway.

The amendments will have to be passed by the Dewan Negara, receive Royal Assent and be gazetted before they come into full force. All operators under e-hailing services will have to obtain an intermediation business licence issued by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) in Peninsular Malaysia or the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) for Sabah and Sarawak.

The intermediation business licenses can be renewed but aren’t allowed to be transferred or reassigned to someone else. Anyone who is convicted of assaulting, hindering or obstructing those involved in e-hailing services may be liable for a fine of RM1,000, imprisonment of up to three months, or both.

Now, go forth and take Uber or Grab with a peace of mind!
