Uber continues to upgrade its service with various new features to make the app more user friendly and seamless, but simultaneously, there are those that often question the safety of the service itself. Just how safe is an Uber ride, really?
A 24-year-old student in Kuala Lumpur had the worst Uber ride experience of her life yesterday. The victim, whose name she chose not to disclose, uses Uber on a daily basis, and was on her way to Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) when the incident occurred.
Upon arriving at the victim’s pickup point, the driver refused to pick her up at the exact location which she clearly stated on the app. The student then walked out to search for his car instead, which is still acceptable at this point.
When she finally got into the car, the driver began asking her personal questions, such as, “Are you living alone?” and “Do you have a boyfriend?”.
She tried her best to stay calm but the conversation got weirder when the driver delved deeper into the conversation, asking her stuff like, “Have you slept with your boyfriend?,” and, “How many times have you slept with him?”.
The driver then proceeded to joke around about male juice (Yeap, semen), asking if her boyfriend satisfies her, and laughed while peeking at her from the rear-view mirror throughout the whole journey.
The most epic part was when the driver questioned her regarding her virginity and who she lost it to. At this point, the victim refused to respond and was praying for her own safety.
When they finally reached the destination, the driver refused to drop her at the lobby. Instead, he wanted to stop her at the roadside along the highway for his convenience.
Enraged, she took to Facebook to express her creepy encounter and filed a report to Uber. They clearly take complaints very seriously as the driver was immediately suspended.
Clearly dissatisfied, the driver sent a Whatsapp message to the victim apologising for the misunderstanding as he only wanted to chit chat with her.
First of all, having a sexual conversation with a stranger is already uncomfortable; what more with an Uber driver. Uber should seriously step up its game when it comes to background checks on newly appointed drivers..
