Things We Were Told Not To Do On The First Day Of Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is just around the corner! Have you gotten the necessary preparations and decorations done?

If you have not, we suggest you get right to it! The reason being, the Chinese culture traditionally has quite a number of taboos that are associated with the New Year Festival, especially on the first day of Chinese New Year. To ensure you’re on the way to good fortune, and that your parents don’t scream at you, here’s a list of things not to do on the first day of Chinese New Year.

Sweeping

Sweeping the floor or dump the trash is believed to take away the wealth and luck from the entire household, so all brooms hidden during this day.

Washing or Cutting of Hair

Washing or cutting of hair on this day is prohibited, doing so means washing away all good luck for the coming year. On the other hand the use of knives and scissors may lead to cut of fortune.

White and Black Colours

In Chinese Culture, white and black colours symbolise death. So the recommended colours are red and gold since they bring about luck.

Damaged Clothes

Do not wear new clothes that are damaged. If kids especially wear such clothes in the first lunar month, it is said to bring bad luck.

Washing of Clothes

Chinese people do away with washing of clothes on the New Year day since it is the birthday of the god of water.
