As we’re born with different eye shapes, most Asians share one similar trait – monolids. Asian women have always been obsessed with big round eyes with double eyelids due to the beauty standards in Asian countries. Browsing through the magazines for beauty tips and eye makeup tutorials can be disheartening as most of the eye makeup tips are made for people with double eyelids.

Monolid makeup tips are limited and are usually featured in a small columns unless necessary.  However, models with monolids are on the rise in the runway show that just gives us a morality boost to embrace the beauty of monolids. Perhaps we’re determined to break the cycle of generic makeup tips, but we can’t help that most of us go through the same problems. There are no fast routes to perfect makeup, but we’ve these tips should be simple enough to help you through your makeup routine

1. Blend Your Eyeshadow
As monolids have flat surface under the brow bone area, it is important to apply darker eye shadow to enhance the surface. Hence, apply eye shadow with the colour a tad bit darker than your skin colour as well as the lighter eye shadow. Blend them together so that they appear more natural and add depth to your eyes too.

2. Highlight the Corner of Your Eyes
As there is no distinct crease on most monolids, white or glimmering eye shadow is used to enhance the flat surface by creating depth around the inner corner of your eyes. Not only it makes your eyes look bigger, it also brightens up the look and gives an instant eye life.

3.  No Twiggy or Cleopatra look

Unless you’re going for a Halloween party as Twiggy or Cleopatra, drawing a line above your upper lashes is a big no-no. The dramatic crease may look good on double eyelids, but it still appear overdone and unnatural to the whole look. There are other ways to make your eyes look bigger but the fake crease is definitely not the way.

4. Emphasize the Contour
Similar to highlighting, apply pale pink eye shadow on the crease area with the darker pink near the lashes area. The pink shadow (or any mid to light eyeshadow) contours and brings your eyes out. The conventional contouring-eye shading method is lighter color near the lashes and darker color on the crease. Then, apply a darker shade on the crease area with the lighter eye shadow near the lashes area. The light eye shadow will bring your eyes out. However, blend the colour well to blend out the harsh line.

5. Thick Eyeliner
The only reason Asians tend to apply thick base of eyeliner is because it is one of the ways make the eyes look bigger. However, too much eyeliner can only make the eyes look smaller instead hence it is important to master the skills and techniques of applying eyeliner. To make your eyes look bigger, apply the black eyeliner on the upper lashes and line 1/3 from the outer corner under the lower lashes. Use a subtle light coloured liner to complete the 2/3 of the line.

7. Use Mascara
When there’s eyeliner, there’s mascara. These two items cannot be without each other but most people tend to left out the use of mascara. Although eyeliner can do without mascara, but mascara and eyelash curler can make your eyes look wide open. A good tube of waterproof and curl-holding mascara can make sure your monolidded eyes look better

8.  Smokey-eye Makeup

Smokey eyes are the most flattering eye makeup to monolids. It may look dramatic but the gradient effect easily opens up your eyes and gives an edgy rock look. However, do make sure the eye shadow hovers around the eyelids only and blend them well under the brow bone area. Your eye shape can change depending on how you shape your gradient. (source)
