Thailand will forever remain a tourist hotspot for its idyllic beaches, and while its ever so popular Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi was closed temporarily earlier this year for restoration, it has just been reported that it is now set to remain closed indefinitely until further notice to allow it to recover from damage caused by throngs of tourists.

Its closure was first announced in February and it was first expected to last until 1st October. It was later extended until the start of November, but now that has changed again. According to Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the six-month closure just wasn’t sufficient for its recovery.

As of now, trees have been planted within the area, as well as over thousand new corals. However, these latest additions will require time to stabilise and fit into the ecosystem of the bay. Should Maya Bay be open to the public again, a daily cap on visitors may be announced.
