Kabang was not just a pet to 9-year-old Dina and her 3-year-old cousin Princess Diansing. A few months ago, the two girls walked across a busy road in Zamboanga City, Phillipines when a inattentive motorcyclist bore down on them as they stepped onto the street. Their dog, Kabang, threw herself between them, saving their lives but at a devastatingly painful price. An onlooker said Kabang got up and bolted the scene, leaving her ruined nose and upper jaw on the street. Kabang lost her entire snout to save her beloved owners.
Kabang was sent to receive eight months of veterinary treatment in the United States. She received dental and facial reconstructive surgery at UC Davis Veterinary Medicine from October 11, 2012 onwards. She was discharged on June 3, 2013.
Doctors have successfully closed her facial wound but could no longer save and reconstruct her nose. Kabang also survived a cancerous tumor and heartworm.
Kabang has also received a new title as “dog ambassador of goodwill”. Anton Lim, a veterinarian who accompanied Kabang to the United States said, “What we want is to make her an ambassador of dog good will, and to promote responsible pet ownership”. (Source)
