Review: A Separation

When we see an Iranian pass by us, most of us would immediately think of dusty roads, an extremely hot weather and tasty kebabs sold at the road sides.

But how many of us actually do know the trials and tribulations people in the country go through especially if they come from a moderate family?

If you are a person who enjoys learning about different countries, appreciate literature and enjoying knowing more about different peoples culture and traditions then you would certainly not miss out on A Separation.

The independent film was produced in 2011 by Asghar Farhadi and won the academy award for the  Best Foreign Language Film of the year, the Golden Bear for Best Film at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival and Best Foreign Film at the 69th Golden Globe Awards.

The movie will be released at  TGV Sunway Pyramid on 26th April 2012. An exclusive premiere was held on Tuesday in collaboration with Suraya Films, the Iranian Embassy and BFM Radio to show their support towards independent films in the country.

So what is A Separation about? Set in a typical Iranian background, Simin (Leila Hatami) requests for a divorce from her husband Nader (Peyman Moaadi) with an excuse that she doesn’t see an opportunity for her daughter in the country. Her husband who is not willing to let go of his ego lets her go her own way with the excuse that he needs to look after his father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Their daughter is aware that if she follows her mother she would be guaranteed a better future. But why doesn’t she leave?

Watch how this story grows when Nader decides to hire a lady to take care of his dad and the sacrifices she makes just to look after a sick man and at the same time to be obedient to her religion and her own husband.

A mothers unconditional love towards her child, an ego of a guy, a responsible son, the sacrifices an outsider makes to save an elderly man and the sacrifices a daughter makes to keep the family together is clearly seen in this movie and you will only be able to judge it after watching it.

Join these Iranian families in this movie and go on a journey with them to experience life from a different angle.
