Long before Balenciaga started turning Ikea-inspired totes into it bags, Gucci, under the direction of former creative director Tom Ford, had a habit of putting its own luxe spin on a surprising amount of non-fashion items.
Of course, since Gucci is also known for being somewhat naughty, there was the infamous pair of silver-plated Gucci handcuffs which has reentered the internet yesterday, popping-up on resale site Grailed for an astounding price of $65,000 (RM265,167).
Wonder why it’s selling at such a high price? Here’s a little backstory:
The iconic cuffs were originally produced in 1998 by Tom Ford, the same year that Italian socialite Patrizia Reggiani was sentenced to 29 years in prison for hiring a hitman to kill her husband, Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of Gucci founder Guccio Gucci.
According to press accounts at the time, the handcuffs were widely speculated to have been employed in a way to send a message.
These aren’t the first Gucci handcuffs to have hit the resale market — although we’d guess they’re the most expensive. Back in 2009, a pair was sold by the auction house Christie’s for approximately $1,917 (RM7,820), while another pair is currently on display at the official Museo Gucci in Florence.
According to Grailed, the cuffs are made of solid silver and come with the original dust bag and a contemporary Gucci box.
