According to sources, there are reports suggesting that a meteor may have exploded 10,000 meters above the ground this morning in the Russian region of the Ural Mountains.

The Youtube video above shows a bright object falling from the sky. An emergency official told Reuters, “It was definitely not a plan. We are gathering bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far.” The incident occurred in Chelyabinsk, about 1,500 kilometers east of Moscow.

An emergency official also suggests that it could be a meteorite rain. “We have information about a blast at 10,000-meter (32,800 foot) altitude. It is being verified”. However, there are also conflicting reports as some reported there was more than a single meteorite, and some reported that at least four people have been injured too.

Local accounts tell sources of burning objects in the sky and huge blasts that shattered windows and set off car alarms. Sources have yet to confirm that cause of these explosions, but some suggest that a meteor was blown away by a suface-to-air missile salvo. (Source)

We’re still beginning to unravel the mystery of this incident, but we’ll certainly keep you updated.

To date, the largest meteorite to hit Earth, dates back to ancient times and has left a huge crater in South Africa, called the Vredeford Dome, measures roughly 300km across.
