OPINION: I’m Proud to Be a Chameleon

I heard this quote from the movie Fast & Furious 5:

“First, we need a chameleon, someone who blends in anywhere,” as said by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) as he was expecting Han (Sung Kang) to join the team.

This quote bugs me a lot, and I’m start thinking of my life that I’ve been through so far…

I’m gonna say this out loud – I’m Chinese, a typical Chinese girl raised by a typical Chinese family, studied in a Chinese primary school and Chinese high school.

When I was 17, my mom was encouraged by her friend to let me explore the world outside on my own. That’s the one thing I’ve hidden deep down in my heart –  I want to get out from this circle and explore the world that’s full of cruelty and danger.

My mother gave me that freedom. Thanks mom!

That’s my mom!

A chameleon is a person who can adapt to any social situation he or she is put in. It’s cold hard fact to know that there are Chinese people everywhere, and almost every big civilizations has their very-own Chinatown to cater to the local Chinese community. Clearly it shows how adaptable we Chinese are when it comes to mingling with people.

Many people were impressed by the nature of the Chinese culture –  humble, respectful, and hardworking. But the most important thing is that we’re able to suck-up no matter what happens, because we truly believe that “we supposed to get used to the society, not the society fits us.” I’m not self-phrasing, but that’s just what my parents taught me. In short, it’s also the Chinese way of life.

When I study, work and play, I love meeting different people, strangers or new co-workers even though we may argue at first. I may not look friendly at first sight but to those who know me well enough, I guess I’m not that bad right? It totally fits how a chameleon is meant to act.

My graduation!! Having fun with my gay-best-friend!

I’m a student, an employee, a friend, the eldest daughter of the family. I want to be sure that I play these roles well.

People somehow think that chameleons are annoying. But I don’t care, I’m not changing myself for the sake of being liked.  I’ve tried so hard to look around, analysing the entire situation before I make the next move, so I’ll just be more cautious when choosing friends.

So, are you like me too?
