The next time you’re at The Gardens Mall, in addition to indulging in good food and shopping, take some time to immerse yourself in art and just maybe you’ll find yourself appreciating art a lot more. Wei-Ling Contemporary is an art gallery with a portfolio of exciting contemporary art pieces under their belt and this February, gallery owner and curator, Lim Wei-Ling brings to us yet another provocative and provoking exhibition by Umibaizurah titled “Tag” .

THE ARTIST

Umibaizurah Mahir or fondly known to the art community as Umi, graduated from MARA (UiTM) and is known as one of the country’s most important ceramists with her distinctively naïve yet provocative works that dwell on issues of development. Her second solo exhibition in her decade long career is simply titled “Tag” in an cheeky attempt to depict the necessity for both physical and digital worlds to co-exist in today’s consumerist society. According to Umi, tags are descriptors used as a means of coding and organising products and providing necessary information.

According to Umi, “I want to alter people’s perception of ceramics. Modern times are bringing big changes to the making of ceramics, as it transforms from a functional form to modern artistic or sculptural forms.”

Her collection on exhibits this time round revolve around child-like metaphors that will tickle the kid in you. Over the years, she has slowly but surely found her own voice and standing as an artist. Her works have received international recognition with exhibitions in Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Sweden, Korea and Pakistan.

The exhibition is currently ongoing at Wei-Ling Contemporary until the 6th of March 2012 from 11am to 9pm daily. Wei-Ling Contemporary is located at G212 & 213A, Ground Floor, The Gardens Mall, 59200 KL. Admission is free.
