J.K. Rowling has clarified with Huffington Post that it’s not exactly a novel and won’t read like the other Harry Potter books, it’s actually a script in book format. The Cursed Child is a two-part play opening in London this summer. While the story-line does pick up from the Deathly Hallows and still adheres to the same characters, it is neither a sequel or a prequel to the series.

J.K. Rowling has unveiled a new addition to the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Parts 1 & 2. This 8th instalment resumes from the epilogue of the last book.
The final scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows took place 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, where Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermoine were seen bidding goodbyes as their children board the Hogwarts Express to the wizarding school.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” picks up after that scene. Harry Potter is now a father of three and employed at the Ministry of Magic. Both Harry and his son Albus struggle with their family legacy and against darkness.
Here’s an excerpt from the official synopsis:
“While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
