Animal abuse has always been an issue in Malaysia and for years, Malaysians have fought  against animal abuse in hope to save the animals from brutality and cruelty. Most animal abuse cases in Malaysia are almost never reported,  and the penalties on animal abusers are too low that the cases could happen over and over again.

However, animal abusers are about to face harsh penalties as a new law is ready for tabling in Parliament.

According to Veterinary Department director-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin, the final draft of the Animal Welfare Bill is aimed at a more extensive and intensive enforcement of the law. The draft included several amendments suggested by the public and participants of several public engagements.

“The animal welfare officers can make an arrest and build a case, but the prosecution will be done by the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” said Dr Abdul Aziz.

He also said pet owners would be made to register their animals under their department and the registration will be carried out in stages. The conducted activities related to animals are required to register with the department as well.

As for now, we hope the Bill could be debated and passed by Parliament as soon as possible.
